Q I read with horror the recent report that passive smoking is killing 30 people a day. I have never smoked but am increasingly worried about the risk of being near people who do. When my friends light up a cigarette, can I ask them to stub it out without sounding like a killjoy?
A If this is something you feel strongly about, then it is always okay to ask and, in some situations, it is okay to demand. I am a reformed 60a-day smoker, so I will always politely ask friends smoking near me if they could possibly move further away.
