Mar. 6--DANA POINT -- The reason for all the excitement was out in plain view just minutes after the whale-watching boat, Dana Pride, left the harbor: a California gray whale, huffing its way north to Alaska.
"Whale bubbles!" said 3-year-old Lauren Witkowski, of San Juan Capistrano, watching from her father's shoulders as the big animal surfaced. "I see him!"
Onshore, the city was just beginning its Festival of Whales, with a country band warming up on a lawn outside the harbor shops, a parade with ocean-themed floats marching down Pacific Coast Highway and a lesson on the history of whaling getting started at the nearby ...
