Commercial mortgage bankers in slump from cautious market

Residential mortgage banking loans continued to rise in 1991, while commercial mortgage banking loans took a sharp, downward turn, according to research for the San Diego Business Journal's lists of largest independent mortgage bankers.

The residential mortgage banking industry reaped the rewards of refinancing because of the lowest interest rates in the last 20 years, said Lindsey Nicholl, president of the San Diego Mortgage Bankers Association.

Residential mortgage bankers specialize in originating, funding and servicing loans for homes or for apartment projects with four of fewer units.
