On a recent visit to the laboratory of neuroscientists Hanna and Antonio Damasio at the University of Iowa, philosopher Patricia Churchland got a unique perspective on her work. The researchers needed to bolster their bank of computerized images of a "typical" brain, so Churchland, a professor at the University of California at San Diego, volunteered to help out by putting her cranium into the lab's imaging machines. The result was a series of picture showing the philosopher's brain in action, something that, as Churchland puts it, "Aristotle would have given his eyeteeth for."
