With China's machine-tool demand booming--drying up Chinese sources for machine parts--Mori Seiki has had to reinvest in equipment in its Japanese plants.

Interviewed at the opening of Mori Seiki's new United Kingdom technical center (Slough, U.K.), Mori Seiki president Dr. Masahiko Mori says, "Now Chinese consumption is so large, our Japanese plants' machine shops are having to invest in new machine tools to meet increased domestic demand." Until recently, many machine parts for Mori Seiki's three Japanese plants at Nara, Iga, and Chiba, had been produced at the company's Chinese plant, set up in 2001.
