IN THE 1960S, EL DORADO WAS no different than most towns in Arkansas. Its downtown area was getting rundown and the number of empty buildings grew as retail business began moving out to shopping centers where larger stores with larger parking lots could be built.
El Dorado could have become like so many other cities in the state whose downtown areas remain mostly empty to this day.
But El Dorado had an unlikely savior. As a result, its downtown is full of unique retail shops, restaurants, pubs--and, well, life. It comes close to having a resort feel to it.
Ask anyone who the driving force behind the El Dorado turnaround is and all quickly say it ...
