MONONA -- Residents here have two months to mull whether Squaw Bay should be changed to a name that is less offensive to American Indians.
After a lengthy, emotional debate Monday night, the City Council voted 4-3 to table for 60 days a recommendation to the Dane County Board and Wisconsin Geographic Names Council that a new name be chosen.
City Council members said they hope in that time to bring together members of the Ho-Chunk Nation, homeowners near the bay and other Monona residents to discuss the potential name change. A similar ...
