Anti-smoking campaigners want to reduce the influence of actors smoking on film, a powerful form of marketing for the tobacco industry. The Cancer Council of New South Wales has made a counter-advertisement, which it is offering free to local cinemas and health authorities. It wants the State Government to make it compulsory for cinemas to run anti-smoking advertising before screening films that feature high levels of smoking. The idea is also being discussed by the Australian Government. In the recent film "Alfie", all of the main characters smoke.
