Mar. 9--The future of automobiles could hinge on research into hydrogen-powered cars at HRL Laboratories in Malibu.
The company -- owned by General Motors, Boeing and Raytheon -- is working with GM on how to store hydrogen to power hydrogen fuel cell cars that are expected to be developed by 2010. There are different methods available, but HRL is researching solid state hydrogen storage.
HRL's history goes back more than 50 years, when Howard Hughes started what was then Hughes Research Laboratories. More than half of HRL's 300 employees are from Ventura County, including HRL Vice President Conilee Kirkpatrick of Thousand ...
