McNeil Nutritionals, the manufacturer of the calorie-free sweetener Splenda, is returning fire by filing a countersuit against The Sugar Association, each of its 17 members and Qorvis Communications, the public relations firm that represents The Sugar Association. The court action, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware, charges The Sugar Association with false advertising and deceptive trade practices. The suit is in response to a false advertising lawsuit The Sugar Association filed against McNeil in California in December that seeks to prevent the makers of Splenda from continuing what it called a "misleading" advertising campaign.
