The vast majority of Americans, more than 85 percent, say said they are confident in the federal government's ability to protect the nation's food supply, according to a recent Gallup poll. The survey also shows that Americans feel more confident about government food safety programs today than they did a few years ago. Thirty-one percent of the respondents said they had "a great deal" of confidence in the food supply, up from 21 percent in July 2001, and 19 percent in July 2002. This percentage has more than doubled since 1999, when just 15 percent of Americans had a great deal of confidence in the government's ability to keep the food supply safe.
