Noble Energy plans a major development drilling program in Northeast Colorado's Niobrara Chalk gas play this year while companies such as Western Gas Resources and Bill Barrett are in the early phases of establishing operations in the area.
Ted Price, who heads Noble's US onshore business, told Natural Gas Week that the company has been active in the Niobrara Chalk since 1993 and had previously drilled about 200 wells there. It plans to step up the pace by drilling 235 more wells this year.
The Niobrara trend consists of relatively shallow, low-permeability chalk that contains biogenic gas, formed by the action of bacteria on organic matter.
