Q: Is there a diet for gout?

A: Yes, there is. And there is a diet that may help you avoid this painful condition, too. Gout is caused when needle-like crystals of uric acid accumulate in connective tissue and between joints. (The big toe comes to mind.) Uric acid develops more readily when a susceptible person eats too much protein, fat and alcohol and doesn't drink enough water and other fluids. Being overweight can also aggravate gout.
