MONTEREY, CALIF. -- Strength training can build strength and neuromuscular coordination in prepubescent children, Holly Benjamin, M.D., said at a meeting on pediatric and adolescent sports medicine sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Strength training involves the use of progressive resistance to increase one's ability to exert or resist force. This may be accomplished through isometrics or using free weights or weight machines, but it is not the same as body building, weight lifting, or power lifting.
