National Party senator, Barnaby Joyce, has proposed a radical plan to ensure that rural services are up to standard under a privatised Telstra. Under the plan, the Australian Government would compensate rural telephone users for faulty infrastructure and for higher telephone rates, but the Government would also have the power to recoup the cost of compensation from industry. Joyce's vote will be crucial in the bid to pass the Telstra sale legislation.
