Mar. 14--ST. LOUIS INDUSTRY CRUMBLES FURTHER WITH LATEST PLANT: The city of St. Louis is about to lose a few more pieces of its glorious manufacturing history.
On the south riverfront, Solutia is shutting down its Queeny chemical plant, where Monsanto was founded in 1901. Schreiber Foods is closing the plant on North Newstead Avenue where the Raskas family made cream cheese for decades. Graham Packaging, on Hereford Street, will produce its last plastic bottles this weekend.
Solutia employs 60 people at the Queeny plant, with 220 at Schreiber and 135 at Graham. So, none is a giant blow to the city, but it's a new chapter ...
