LAST AUGUST, one month before he presented his spring collection in New York, Ralph Rucci confessed that he was sick of himself. He insisted it happens every time he finishes a new collection, but nonetheless he seemed exhausted by his own obsessiveness. He gestured to a pile of drawings on his desk. "Why do I spend two days agonizing over every line, changing one-eighth of an inch on pants and skirts? Why not use a pant or skirt from an earlier season?" The questions were largely rhetorical.
