A remarkable paradox exists between the stated determination of British statesmen to hold their empire together and its rapid dissolution from the late 1940s. Winston Churchill spoke for many of his contemporaries in 1942 when he stated that he did not become prime minister "in order to preside over the liquidation of the British Empire," and Conservatives had cast themselves as proponents of empire since Benjamin Disraeli's era.
