QUESTION
Much of the success of London's Carnaby Street as a centre of fashion can be attributed to John Stephen and his clothes shop. What became of him?
JOHN STEPHEN was born in Glasgow on August 28, 1934, moved to London in 1952 to work in the military department at Moss Bros and soon spotted that young men no longer wished to dress like their fathers.
He opened his first shop at No 5 Carnaby Street in 1957, selling flamboyant but affordable clothes, and it quickly became the coolest shop in London.
