Mar. 16--Broward schools may make a solo run for a half-penny sales tax rather than joining the County Commission and other agencies in seeking voter approval for more money.

"Personally, like Frank Sinatra, I'd rather do it my way," Board member Bob Parks said. "I think we need to look out for priority No. 1 and that isn't a new jailhouse ... it's for education."

The board on Tuesday ordered Superintendent Frank Till to commission a poll during the next two weeks to gauge public support for a half-penny sales tax that might provide $130 million to be spent on anything from more classrooms to more teachers.
