Mar. 18--The accountants were back, and the phones rang off the hook for a second straight day at the 12th annual Daily News Tax Help hotline.

Stock gifts, filing status and settling old mistakes were among a host of questions readers had for tax experts from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accounts.

Ralph Grottalio of Harrison found first-hand this year that paperwork involved when switching funds between investment houses can lead to messy tax errors. A $10,000 Treasury certificate he bought in 1993 after early retirement from the Post Office doubled by the time he cashed it last year.
