CHICAGO _ John Zachary DeLorean, an auto innovator who could have been king but had to settle for jester, died Saturday in a New Jersey hospital at the age of 80 following complications from a stroke.
DeLorean gained fame when, as chief engineer of Pontiac, he stuffed a V-8 engine in a compact Tempest and created the GTO. He also developed the sports car that carried his name.
"John DeLorean was one of Detroit's larger-than-life figures who secured a noteworthy place in our industry's history," GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said in a statement.
