Sometimes a photoeye just doesn't see enough, but a full-blown vision system is overblown. For "betwixt and between" applications like that, Cognex Corp. now offers Checker 101, a self-contained inspection unit that offers just the right degree of sophistication.
Checker specializes in detecting presence or absence of objects, such as caps or labels, in a fast-moving line. Such applications would require multiple photoelectric sensors, in complex arrangements. On the other hand, camera-based vision systems are set up to give a lot more information than would be necessary for a present/not present application--at much greater cost and complexity.
