The new IT system forms another milestone in the government's plan to turn Mauritius into a Cyber Island. Many major US companies, including Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and IBM, have already set up their regional headquarters on the island, while increasing numbers of Indian companies are investing.

In January, the government announced that nationwide broadband coverage with wireless access would be achieved by the end of March. A network of smart antennas has been developed to allow access from every home and workplace, or even on the beach, as each antenna has a range of several kilometres.
