The creation of the East African customs union should offer great opportunities for Kenyan firms to target markets across the region. Not only are trade barriers with Tanzania and Uganda being gradually removed, but Rwanda, Burundi and other states in the region are keen to become involved in order to encourage trade with the wider world.

Yet reducing the costs of regional economic development will have far less impact if trade with the rest of the world continues to be restricted by poor transport links.
