(EDITORS: Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich and Chicago Tribune photographer Phil Velasquez traveled to Panama City in January to cover the Panama Jazz Festival and to explore the culture of a country with deep ties to the United States, thanks largely to the Panama Canal. By visiting musicians, scholars, critics, folklorists and archivists, as well as attending performances and rehearsals, they found a country trying to re-establish its identity _ apart from the United States and other foreign powers _ through music.)
