This article is brought to you courtesy of a Motion Computing M1400 Tablet PC and the latest version 8.0 of Dragon Naturally Speaking, and is evidence that voice input is coming of age. One of the problems with early speech transcription was that you had to place a good microphone at just the right position by your mouth for it to work. Also, processors and memory capacities were simply not up to the task.
Last month, I promised to try it using the M1400's built-in twin microphones, which can focus on your words and use noise-cancellation techniques to reduce background sounds. I did not, frankly, expect it to work, but I was wrong.
