Mar. 21--A Dawson County group's efforts to protect sections of the Etowah and Amicalola rivers from development depends on what the city of Atlanta wants.

That's because sections of the Etowah and Amicalola rivers that the group would like declared state scenic rivers traverse land purchased by Atlanta in the 1970s for a possible second airport site.

The state Department of Natural Resources, which oversees the process of qualifying scenic rivers, told the Dawson group this month it won't move ahead without Atlanta's blessing.
