While Canada's proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline is well ahead of the much larger Alaska pipeline proposal in terms of the regulatory approval process, it suffers from the lack of a powerful champion like Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski, who is lobbying hard to overcome obstacles to the $20 billion project.
The governor, a former Republican senator with a multitude of contacts in the US Capitol, sought help last week in Washington, D.C., from Vice President Dick Cheney during a meeting in which they apparently discussed lifting the ban on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
