SMS.ac gains members, detractors as wireless learns viral marketing lessons.(News)

Even in the rough-and-tumble world of wireless, few companies have attracted as much attention as SMS.ac.

The San Diego-based premium-messaging provider has gained remarkable attention from the mainstream press in the last year, drawing coverage from prominent U.S. dailies including the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and USA Today. Last June, The New York Times ran a front-page story highlighting SMS.ac's "flirt,'' "liars'' and "cheat'' clubs, in which members use text messages to find love, skip out of work or cheat on a lover.
