What does it look like?

Verticillium wilt is caused by a microscopic fungus that attacks the water-conducting tissues in the tree and impairs the flow of water and nutrients up to the leaves. Usually the first symptom people observe is sudden wilting or browning of leaves on one or more branches. Eventually the entire crown may become wilted. Individual leaves appear scorched and turn brown, starting at the margins of the leaf and progressing inward. Peeling back the bark of affected branches will often yield a greenish to brown or black discoloration of the vascular tissue, especially on the lower portions of the tree (except on green ash).
