The uneasy relationship that Malaya shared with Indonesia between 1957 and 1962 has already been chronicled. (1) Several scholars have drawn attention to the role of individual leaders in fomenting bilateral friction, noting in particular the tension between Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and President Sukarno. (2) From a Malayan perspective, implicit in such assertions is the connection between the Tunku's personal proclivities and the Malayan government's attitudes and policies towards Indonesia.
