Like the team he helped build, Scott Pioli successfully defended his title. The Patriots vice president of player personnel won the George Young NFL Executive of the Year award for the second straight season yesterday.

Pioli received 19 votes from the 55 NFL owners, general managers, personnel directors and front office executives who were polled by The Sporting News, easily outdistancing the competition. San Diego Chargers vice president and general manager A.J. Smith, a former Patriots scout, finished second with nine votes, and Tom Heckert, the Philadelphia Eagles director of personnel, was third with 8 1/2.
