On frosty winter evenings, trout angler Gene Carey of Cicero likes to experiment with line-to-hook fishing knots.
One of the strongest and easiest knots he's tested is called the "Eugene Bend."
No, the knot is not named after Carey.
The Eugene Bend is the creation of Ken Eugene, a California angler who acquired a knack for knots while serving as a chief boatswain's mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
"I swear by it," said Carey.
He's been using the Eugene Bend to affix trout flies to leader tippets for the past four fishing seasons.
