Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's color barrier 58 years ago, was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Friends, family and members of Congress gathered for the 90-minute ceremony, which included a speech by President Bush and a performance by the Howard University Gospel Choir.
"This medal confirms what we know," Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson told the crowd. "Jackie Robinson stands as a heroic role model for all Americans who believe in justice and equality ... My thanks to all for this generous expression of appreciation for a life well lived."
