Maurice J. (Mitch) Freedman says 23 years of fighting the good fight for Westchester's libraries is enough for him.

Freedman is retiring in June as executive director of the Westchester Library System, saying he's worn out by the last seven years of fighting state and county budget cuts.

"I'm fired of fighting the money battle. For seven years we've had no state increase. The county cut us a year ago. It has made the job one of constant fund raising and fighting for money," Freedman said.

Another reason, said Freedman, is his age; he is 65. A search for a successor will start soon.
