Mar. 24--The clock is ticking on what one local economic development specialist calls "the state's most powerful economic tool."
The state Empire Zone Program, which provides financial incentives to new or expanding businesses, is due to expire March 31, barring any legislative action by the state to extend it.
Local elected and economic development officials gathered Wednesday at a manufacturing plant in the Jefferson County Corporate Park that has used the program's benefits to help it grow. The officials spoke of the importance to the area of making sure the program is extended.
