A temporary underwater electronic fish fence intended to keep aquatic aliens from infesting Lake Michigan has sparked--literally--safety concerns for recreational and commercial vessels that have to sail through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal that connects the lake to the Illinois River, about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. In fact, the DC electrical current in the water of the canal could incapacitate a boater who falls in to the point where officials are requiring life jackets for anyone on deck in part of that waterway.
