Introduction

Soil bulk density is traditionally used as an indicator of soil structure (Gantzer and Anderson 2002) and soil compaction (Martinez and Zinck 2004; Reichardt and Timm 2004). Soil structural degradation can be caused by traffic during management practices (Dias Junior 2003), and by natural mechanisms of soil material consolidation during wetting/drying cycles (Cassel 1983; Onstad et al. 1984). An increase in soil compaction leads to an increase in soil bulk density (Dias Junior et al. 1999) with a consequent decrease in total porosity of the porous medium (Servadio et al. 2001).
