Mar. 23--MANCHESTER United's half-year results had own goal written all over them. They must have left chief executive David Gill feeling more than a little sympathy for the club's luckless goalie Roy Carroll, whose tenure at Old Trafford will end this season after a series of gaffes and fumbles.
Yesterday Gill looked decidedly nervous as he gave his assessment of the half-time score. A comparatively mediocre season on the pitch meant that ManU's pretax profits more than halved to [pounds sterling]12.4m.
That is not the sort of performance that wins fans in the City. Nor will it help the club's cause as it attempts to fend off ...
