As the title suggests, Comprehending the Whole attempts to understand the whole of Durrell's novels, poems and stories, as both an evolutionary work in progress, beginning with the pre-Black Book novels and ending with the final works, The Avignon Quintet and The Revolt of Aphrodite, and as individual works of art which stand on their own outside of Durrell's oeuvre. While such an ambition can be by no means exhaustive, it is a potentially illuminating one and is, more often than not, a surprisingly successful one.
