Sir Arthur C. Clarke is best known for his collaboration with Stanley Kubrick on the classic 1968 science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The opening scene was disturbing. Viewers expecting a futuristic hi-tech extravaganza were greeted by an extended family of ape-men and women on the arid African savannah, grunting and growling. Night falls and in the morning they awake to find something new in the neighborhood. A ten-foot-tall, black rectangular object has appeared outside their cave. They dance around it, tiptoe cautiously closer, and thrill to touch the mysterious intruder.
The scene shifts to a confrontation at one of the last remaining, local watering ...
