By now you've probably seen one. Full-page ads promoting prostate awareness are appearing in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Time--just to name a few. They advise older men to see their doctors about the urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate, the male sex gland that surrounds the urethra at the base of the bladder.
By raising awareness of this common prostate condition, Merck & Co. is selling its new prescription drug, although Proscar goes unmentioned in the ads. The ads are "educational," informing the public that doctors can now offer several treatment options.
