Lisl Auman's conviction was overturned by a 4-1 vote, and Robert Harlan's death sentence was officially vacated, all in one day.
Harlan's death sentence, which arose out of the brutal murder of a young woman and the crippling of a good Samaritan, was set aside by the trial judge, once it was learned that a Bible had been brought into the jury room and that biblical passages had been discussed in reaching the decision that Harlan should die.
Because religious beliefs were involved, the trial court's original ruling setting aside the sentence was controversial, but hardly unexpected, since Colorado law forbids external ...
