Air pollution can affect health in many ways, short- and long-term. Some people are more sensitive to pollutants--especially young children and the elderly. People with asthma and other health problems may also suffer when the air is polluted. The extent to which an individual is harmed by air pollution usually depends on their total exposure--duration and concentration.

The problem is no longer simply one of outdoor pollution, though. Individuals who experience symptoms from airborne pollutants are likely to have been exposed outdoors and indoors.
