It was 1998 and the San Diego Padres were about to appear in their second World Series against the powerhouse New York Yankees. On the November ballot that year was Proposition C, a $456.8 million project that would put a brand-spanking new ballpark for the Padres in the city's East Village adjacent to the Convention Center.

Once approved by the voters, land clearing for the 46,000-seat PETCO Park kicked off in February, 2000 and, after a few legal adventures which temporarily stopped work, the park opened for business on April 8, 2004, as the Padres took the field against the San Francisco Giants.
