Mar. 29--TOKYO -- A group of fans of "gyudon" beef-and-rice bowl dishes across the country and restaurant industry officials prodded the government Tuesday into lifting a 15-month ban on U.S. beef imports as quickly as possible.
The group, headed by Takashi Sakamoto, president of used book chain Bookoff Corp., submitted to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshinobu Shimamura some of the signatures it collected from some 1.19 million people calling for the resumption of U.S. beef imports.
"We will try to live up to your expectations," Shimamura was quoted as telling group members who visited his office in Tokyo.
