Apparently irreconcilable differences separate Republicans and Democrats over the biggest challenge facing the 2005 session of the state Legislature: designing a budget for the next two years.
Republicans know that government appropriations are inherently less productive than private spending. Taxes have become more and more burdensome over the years.
Democrats know that state government spending has been reduced drastically in recent years. There is no practical way of improving public services without spending more.
