Amy Hempel has had one of the strangest careers of any writer of the past 20 years. Her acclaimed debut collection, "Reasons to Live," appeared in 1985, and in the intervening years Hempel published just two additional volumes of short fiction, "At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom" (1990) and "Tumble Home" (1997).
Even for one of the more revered minimalists of the Gordon Lish school, that's pretty slim pickings, and the wait between books - and even stories - has been agonizing for her cult of fans, led most recently by Hempel's most vociferous of cheerleaders, Chuck Palahniuk. (Alice Munro also ...
