WHEN Peter Houghton was given a mechanical heart, doctors thought it would add just a few more months to his life.
But five years later, he is still in robust health and has become the longest-surviving mechanical heart patient in the world.
His doctors believe he is a walking advert for a tiny device, the size of a thumb tip, that could one day save thousands of lives.
